New here and interested in buying a new California, still lots to research. A few questions if I may.

How popular is the 4Motion?

Which is the most popular of the diesel engines, use and reliability?

I am a fan of automatic gearboxes, is the VW version OK?

There are regular posts on this topic. From my point of view, the 96 kW and the 128 kW are the most popular and usable engines. Depends on your money and style of driving. I chose the 128 kW but cruise only. But I know that I can speed as well and have some reserves for overtaking...

I am a fan of automatic gearboxes, is the VW version OK?

I still like it after 3 months. Two days ago, I had a rental car with manual gear, and I must admit that this was f***ing hell. Driving through a bigger city is much more relaxing with automatic gear. And ok, it is not the fastest, but I am driving a MV, not a Porsche...

Hello Morzine,

First off all: You have to decide: 4motion OR Automatic.
Threre is no way to get both with one of the Diesel Engines.

I have the smaller Automatic one with 96kw and for my feeling, it's a wonderfull combination.
It is no racer, but it is realy fast enought to overtake in normal travic.

regarding to your first question, in my opinion the 4motion became much mor popular in the past years. Compared to the older T4, in the T5 the percentage of cars with 4motion is much more higher.

If you chose an automatic transmission or a manual shiftet gearbox with a 4motion depends on your interests. The price will be nearly the same. You have to know, if you like travelling sometimes outside the roads or if you like to stay with your car for a night everywhere at a beach or something in that way. If you spend your time in City-traffic or at the Highways, a automatic transmission is much more comfortable. And I think the VW automatic works pretty well.
But it is a philosophy, as for me I like four wheel driven cars, and i´m happy with my 4motion. Also if there is only one day a year you really need the 4motion, that day will be a great day for you, if you have it....:-)

I know, making the decision is not so easy
